The Long Night
Time had no meaning inside the tower.
Elara existed in a state that was neither waking nor sleeping, alive nor dead, present nor absent. She had become something fundamental—a barrier of Twilight energy stretched across the void, holding back the First Shadow's endless hunger.
The sacrifice had not been death, precisely. It had been transformation. She had poured her essence into the tower's structure, becoming part of the seal that kept the world safe. Her body was gone, dissolved into pure energy. Her mind existed in a space between spaces, conscious but not corporeal, aware but unable to interact with the physical world.
She could feel the First Shadow pressing against her constantly—a weight like a mountain, a hunger like an ocean, ancient beyond comprehension. It did not hate her. It did not even truly perceive her as a separate entity. She was simply an obstacle to its nature, a dam holding back a flood that had existed since before time began.
And she was failing.
The seal required constant maintenance, constant attention, constant energy. Elara poured everything she had into it—her power, her memories, her love, her grief. She replayed every moment with Kaelen like a prayer, using the strength of their bond to reinforce the barrier. She thought of Lyra, of Corin and Maren, of all the people she had sworn to protect.
But the First Shadow was inexorable. Slowly, inevitably, it wore her down.
She felt herself thinning, stretching, becoming transparent. Each thought took longer to form. Each memory was harder to hold. She was becoming part of the void herself, losing her identity in the endless struggle to maintain the seal.
