Six months.

Six months since Elara had entered the tower. Six months of Kaelen splitting his consciousness between ruling a kingdom and sustaining a seal that held back the end of the world.

He had aged in that time. Not physically—the Twilight power sustained him—but in his eyes. The weight of dual existence showed in the deep lines around his mouth, the permanent shadow beneath his gaze, the exhaustion that never fully lifted.

But he did not falter.

Each morning, he held court. Judged cases. Signed decrees. Met with advisors and diplomats and the endless stream of people who needed their king. He performed his duties with the same intelligence and compassion he always had, perhaps even more so now that he understood how fragile everything was.

Each evening, he retreated to his chambers and reached through the Twilight bond to Elara.

Their conversations were not like normal speech. They were exchanges of feeling, impressions, memories shared across the void. He told her about the kingdom's progress—the trade agreements signed, the schools opened, the children born into a world where they would not be burned for their nature.

She told him about the First Shadow. Its patterns. Its weaknesses. The moments when it pressed hardest and the moments when it inexplicably retreated.
