The First Shadow

They made camp at the tower's base, unwilling to approach further without understanding what they faced.

Elara spent the evening in meditation, reaching through her Twilight bond to commune with the Luminara directly. The experience was disorienting—like trying to hold a conversation with a mountain, or reason with the ocean. The Luminara did not think in human terms. It existed in patterns of energy, balances of force, currents of meaning that transcended language.

But gradually, she began to understand.

The First Shadow was not evil, precisely. Evil required intent, and the thing in the tower was too ancient, too alien, for human morality. It was simply... hungry. A void at the beginning of creation that had never been filled, consuming everything it touched not out of malice but out of nature.

The Luminara had been created to balance it—to provide light and meaning and structure to a universe that would otherwise be consumed by emptiness. Light and shadow, order and chaos, existence and void. The fundamental duality that made reality possible.

But the balance was never perfect. It required maintenance. And the last maintenance—the sealing that had created the Shadow Mark—had been performed by Valdris the Hollow, using his own life force to reinforce the prison.

Now that seal was failing. And the only way to repair it was another sacrifice.

Elara broke the communion with tears streaming down her face. She had known, somehow, from the moment she saw the tower. But knowing and accepting were different things.
