The Shadow Mark

The journey to the Shadow Mark took two weeks through terrain that grew progressively more alien.

They passed through the northern provinces, where the villages had been rebuilt and the people had begun to thrive under the new order. Then through the borderlands, where the influence of the Mark began to show in subtle ways—plants that grew in wrong directions, shadows that moved slightly out of sync with their sources, animals that watched with too-knowing eyes.

Finally, they reached the Bleached Spires, the mountain range that had long marked the boundary between Velmora and the Shadow Mark proper. The peaks were pale as bone, stripped of vegetation by centuries of shadow-tainted wind. Passes between them were narrow, treacherous, and increasingly unstable.

Lyra met them at the forward camp, established in a cave system that provided what little shelter the terrain offered. She looked tired but unharmed, and Elara felt some of the tension drain from her shoulders at the sight of her sister whole.

"The tower is two days' march north," Lyra reported, spreading maps across a flat stone. "But the terrain between here and there is... changing. Rapidly. What was passable last week may not be passable now."

"How rapidly?" Kaelen asked.

"We lost two scouts to ground that simply... ceased to exist. One moment they were walking on solid rock. The next, there was nothing beneath their feet." Lyra's voice was steady, but Elara saw the grief in her eyes. "The Mark is not just expanding. It is becoming hostile. Actively hostile."

"As if something is guiding it."
