THE SPIRE
The Spire of Origins rose from a plain of black glass. No trees grew near it. No birds flew overhead. The tower was a single shaft of stone, smooth as water, dark as a closed eye. It had no windows. No doors. It climbed into the purple sky and vanished in the haze of the fracture.
Kael stood at the edge of the glass plain. The mark screamed. It burned. It wanted him to turn back. The closer they got, the more the spiral twisted. The black lines on his neck pulsed. He could feel them in his scalp.
"There's no entrance," Mira said. She shielded her eyes. "Just wall."
"There has to be. The first mages built this. They needed a way in."
They walked around the base. The glass plain cracked under their boots. The cracks were sharp. They cut like knives. Kael's boots were already shredded. He walked carefully.
On the north side, they found the door. Not a door, really. A hole. A square cut in the stone, ten feet up. No ladder. No stairs.
"I'll boost you," Kael said.
"Then what? You can't climb."
