Every time the Unraveled come—blank-faced horrors of bone and violet light that unmake flesh with a touch—the mark screams for blood. And Kael is running out of days before it eats the last of the man he used to be.
The only one who can slow the rot is Mira Thorn: a foul-mouthed hedge witch with a cracked staff and zero patience for broken men. She says the mark is a key. The first mages forged the Great Weave to lock something ancient beneath reality itself. Something that is waking up now.
They call it the Hollow King.
Kael and Mira must reach the Spire of Origins—the black tower where the world was first stitched together—before the mark reaches his heart. But the truth waiting at the top is worse than any monster:
The Weave was never magic. It was a cage.

He can restore the prison and let the old world keep bleeding. He can open the door and become the Hollow King's vessel. Or he can do what no one in three thousand years has dared:

ASHES OF THE WEAVE

Castor opened the book. The pages were covered in the same spiral as Kael's mark. But these spirals were drawn in blood. Old blood. Dried and cracked.

"The first mages were fools," Castor said. "They trapped a god to power their toys. They built a world on a lie. I will end the lie."

"You'll end the world," Mira said. She raised her staff. The crystal glowed weakly. The Spire's order dampened her magic. "If the Hollow King is freed, reality unravels."

"Reality is already unraveling. I am simply choosing the new pattern." Castor pointed at Kael. "The Marked one is the key. His soul is already bound to the Hollow King. I need only complete the bond. Open the door. Let the king walk free. And I will be his herald. His right hand in the new world."

Kael laughed. It was a bitter sound. "You think a god will serve you?"

"I think a god will reward the one who frees him."

"You're an idiot."

Castor's face darkened. "Kill the witch. Bring me the Marked."

The guards charged. Twenty men in iron armor. They filled the room. Kael had no weapon. Mira had a staff. The odds were bad.

Kael met the first guard with his fist. The man swung a sword. Kael ducked. He grabbed the guard's wrist and twisted. Bone snapped. The sword fell. Kael caught it. He swung. The blade bit into the next guard's thigh. The man screamed.

Mira's staff cracked across a face. The crystal blazed. A burst of green light threw three guards back. But there were more. Always more. A guard grabbed her from behind. She stomped his foot. She rammed her elbow into his gut. She broke free. She spun her staff. It hit his temple. He dropped.

Kael cut his way forward. He was not a graceful fighter. He was a Legion soldier. Brutal. Efficient. He stabbed a guard in the armpit where the armor gapped. He kicked another in the knee. He moved toward Castor. Castor was the goal. Cut the head, and the body falls.

But the mark was slowing him. The black lines covered his face now. He could feel them around his eyes. His vision split. He saw two worlds. One was the room. The other was a gray place. The Deadlands. The Hollow King waited there.

"Kael!" Mira screamed.

A guard's blade caught Kael's side. It cut deep. Blood poured. Kael stumbled. He fell to one knee. The guard raised his sword for the killing blow.

Mira threw her staff. It spun through the air. It hit the guard's head. The man fell. Mira ran to Kael. She pulled him up. They stood back to back. Surrounded.

"I can't hold them," she said. Blood ran from her nose.

"I know." Kael looked at the white thread on the pillar. It was so thin. So fragile. One cut, and the Hollow King would be free. One touch, and the Weave would die forever.

He looked at Castor. The Warden held a black glass dagger. He walked toward the thread.

"No," Kael said.

He reached into himself. Into the mark. Into the cold. He did not push the power out. He did not pull it in. He did something new. He spoke to it.

"You want out," he whispered. "I know. I've felt your hunger. But if you go through him, you'll destroy everything. Including me. Help me now. And I'll find another way."

The mark was silent. Then it answered. Not in words. In feeling. Agreement. Hunger. Patience.

Power flooded Kael. Not black this time. White and black together. A spiral of both. He rose. He moved faster than he should. He crossed the room in a blur. He reached Castor as the dagger fell.

Kael caught the blade. His hand? is marked hand? ripped the black glass. The glass shattered. The shards cut his palm. He did not feel them. He grabbed Castor's throat. He lifted the Warden off his feet.

"You wanted the mark," Kael said. His voice was not his own. It was two voices. His and something deeper. "Take it."

He pressed his palm to Castor's chest. The mark poured into the Warden. Not power. The Hollow King's attention. The Warden's eyes went wide. His mouth opened. He screamed. But no sound came. His body shook. His armor turned gray. His skin turned to dust. He became ash. The ash fell. The Warden was gone.

Kael dropped to his knees. The guards stopped. They looked at the pile of ash that had been their master. They looked at Kael. Fear broke them. They ran. They fled down the stairs, down the ramp, out into the chaos.

Kael was alone. Mira ran to him. She turned him over. His face was half black. The spiral covered his right eye. His left eye was still gray. Still human.

"Kael," she said. "Stay with me."

"I'm here," he rasped. "But he's closer. I can feel him. In the thread."

Kael looked at the pillar. The white thread flickered. And from it, a voice came. The Hollow King.

"You are strong, Kael Vane. Stronger than the first mages. They ran from my power. You hold it. You carry it. Will you be my warden? Will you rebuild my prison? Or will you be my door?"

Kael stood. He leaned on Mira. He walked to the pillar. He looked at the thread. The last thread of the old Weave.

"Neither," he said.

"There is no third path."

"Then I'll make one."

Kael reached out. He touched the thread. The mark blazed. The white thread and the black spiral met. The world screamed. And Kael made his choice.
