THE DEADLANDS
The Deadlands began with a line. On one side, grass. Brown and dying, but grass. On the other side, gray dust. The line was perfect. Like a knife cut.
Kael stepped across. The mark went quiet. The hum in his bones stopped. The itch in his palm vanished. He felt empty. Light. Like a fever had broken.
"The Weave is gone here," Mira said. Her voice was strange. Flat. The air ate sound. "Not broken. Absent. This is what the world was before the first mages spun the threads."
They walked. Their footsteps made no noise. The dust swallowed sound. The sky was gray, not blue. Not storm gray. Just... empty. No clouds. No sun. A pale, sourceless light that cast no shadows.
Kael looked at his hand. The mark was still there. Black spiral. But it was still. Dead. For the first time since Brackwater, he felt like himself. The hunger was gone. The cold in his chest was gone. He was just Kael. A man with a scar and bad luck.
"I can breathe here," he said.
"Don't get used to it. We can't stay. Without the Weave, we have no protection. If the Unraveled come..."
"They can't. The Unraveled are chaos. Chaos needs order to break. Here, there is nothing to break."
