The Weight of Crowns
Being king, Kaelen discovered, involved far less glory and far more paperwork than he had imagined.
A month into his reign, he sat at his desk in the rebuilt study—now the Royal Study, though it felt no different—surrounded by documents requiring his attention. Trade agreements, judicial appointments, petitions from commoners, reports from the newly formed Twilight Guard. Each decision shaped the kingdom in ways large and small, and the weight of that responsibility pressed on him constantly.
"You are frowning again," Elara observed from her seat by the window. She was reviewing intelligence reports from Maren's network, identifying remaining Order radicals who might cause trouble.
"I am thinking."
"You are worrying. There is a difference." She set down her papers and crossed to him, her hand finding his shoulder. "What is it?"
He leaned into her touch, grateful for the grounding. "The northern lords are refusing to acknowledge the Twilight Decree. They say acknowledging shadow magic is heresy. Three of them have withdrawn their tax payments."
"Then they face consequences. You cannot compromise on this, Kaelen. The Decree is the foundation of everything we are building."
"I know. But if I push too hard, they might rebel. And we are not strong enough for a civil war. Not yet."
