New Kingdom
One month after Voss's defeat, Kaelen Veltharim was crowned King of Velmora in a ceremony unlike any in the kingdom's history.
The traditional coronation had always been conducted by the High Luminary, a ritual affirming the divine right of kings through the Luminous Order's blessing. That was impossible now. Instead, Kaelen had designed something new.
He stood in the rebuilt Crystal Basilica—not destroyed, as Elara had thought, but transformed. The shattered crystals had been reformed, light and shadow interwoven in patterns that made the whole structure glow with Twilight energy. It was beautiful. It was impossible. It was exactly right.
Elara stood at Kaelen's right hand, Lyra at his left. Corin stood guard behind them, Maren in the front row of assembled nobles. The crowd that filled the Basilica was smaller than traditional coronations, but more diverse—nobles and commoners, former Order members and hidden Umbramancers, all gathered to witness the beginning of a new age.
Kaelen wore not the traditional white and gold, but deep blue and silver—the colors of the house of Veltharim, yes, but also the colors of evening, of twilight. His crown was newly forged, incorporating both light-crystal and shadow-stone.
He spoke the oath of kingship, but added words of his own.
"I swear to rule not by divine right, but by the consent of those I serve. I swear to protect not only the light, but the shadow that gives light meaning. I swear to build a kingdom where no child is burned for what they are, where no person is made less than human for their nature, where justice wears no mask and mercy needs no justification."
He turned to Elara, and his smile was for her alone.
