Dr. Adrian Vale knew this because he watched it happen through the monitors he had installed three weeks prior, hidden inside the smoke detectors of Marcus Whitfield's penthouse. For a man who had spent fifty years profiting from inflated insulin prices, from medications that cost pennies to produce but dollars to survive, this was the cruelest irony. "Before you moved to the business side."

"Before I sold my conscience for a corner office. Yes."

Adrian appreciated the directness. "Detective Chen has explained what I'm offering?"

"That's correct."

"And the purpose? From your perspective, I mean. What do you hope to accomplish?"

It was the question Adrian had been asking himself. He answered with the honesty Chen's presence demanded.

"I want to know if empathy can be offered rather than imposed. If transformation is possible without destruction. If there's a middle path between accepting evil and killing those who perpetrate it."

"That's not a scientific hypothesis."

"No. It's a personal one."

"You've tested this on yourself?"

"Extensively."

"And the effects?"

"And there's no risk of permanent change?"

Corbin turned to face him. "Why me? Of all the people you could have asked, why approach someone whose crimes are public knowledge?"

"Because you might say yes. Most of my previous subjects would have refused, not from moral objection but from genuine inability to comprehend what was being offered. You can comprehend. That makes you unique."

"And if I say yes, what happens then?"

"You sit in that chair. I place the device on your head. You experience whatever your brain produces in response to the stimulation. When it's over, you leave. No obligations, no follow-up, no reporting."

"Unless I choose to act on what I experience."

"Unless you choose."

Corbin looked at Chen, who stood by the door with her arms crossed, her expression unreadable.

"That's not an answer."

Corbin followed her guidance, gradually stabilizing his breathing though the tears continued. "How do you live with this?" he asked Adrian. "How do you feel this and keep functioning?"

Most people filter it out because feeling everything would be paralyzing. Empathy isn't absence of boundaries—it's knowing the boundaries are artificial and choosing to lower them anyway."

"I don't know if I can go back. To who I was."

"You don't have to. The effects are temporary, but the memory persists. You'll remember what you felt, what you understood. Whether you act on that memory is your choice."

The ninety minutes passed slowly, Corbin cycling through waves of grief, shame, and something that might have been hope. When the device automatically shut off, he sat in silence for several minutes, processing the return to normal consciousness.

"What will you do with that understanding?"

"That choice is yours."

Corbin walked to the door, then paused. "Dr. Vale. I know who you are. What you've done. The other subjects, the ones who didn't volunteer. I read the news. I made the connections."

Adrian tensed. "And?"

"And I don't judge you. I don't condone what you did, but I understand why you did it. More than I did before today." He looked at Chen. "Detective. I assume you're investigating Dr. Vale. I won't report this. But I hope you find a resolution that doesn't destroy whatever he's trying to build."

He left, and the laboratory fell silent. Adrian removed the ultrasound device, checking it for damage, avoiding Chen's eyes.

"It worked," she said finally.

"It worked."

"What now?"

Adrian considered the question. The experiment had been successful beyond his expectations. Corbin had experienced genuine empathy, had processed it without psychological damage, and had left with the capacity to make meaningful choices about his future.

"Why?"

"And that doesn't bother you?"

"So what do we do?"

"We?"

Chen turned to face him. "I'm not sure when this became 'we,' but it did. Maybe when you trusted me enough to tell me the truth. Maybe when I decided to help you instead of arrest you. Maybe when we both watched Corbin cry and realized something important had happened."

"I'm not sure what 'we' means in this context."

"It means we figure out how to use what you've built without becoming what you were. The ultrasound device, the research, the understanding you've developed about empathy and moral failure. There has to be a way to apply that knowledge without killing people or forcing consciousness modification."

Adrian thought about this. It was a question he'd avoided during his months of isolation, too focused on his interventions to consider broader applications of his research.

"There might be," he said slowly. "If the device can be refined, made more portable, easier to use. If the research can be published in a way that doesn't implicate me in previous activities. "That's a lot of ifs."
