The partnership, if it could be called that, developed slowly over the following weeks. Chen continued her official duties with the NYPD while spending weekends in Cambridge, observing Adrian's research and offering perspectives he would never have considered alone.

She was good at seeing patterns, Adrian learned. Not the scientific patterns that occupied his attention, but human patterns—the ways people rationalized their choices, the social dynamics that enabled systemic harm, the subtle incentives that guided behavior without anyone consciously choosing it.

"You're too focused on individuals," she told him one evening, reviewing his files on the remaining subjects. "Whitfield, Kravitz, St. Clair—they're symptoms, not causes. Remove them and the system produces replacements."

"Then what is the cause?"

"Incentives. The way we've structured our economy rewards certain behaviors regardless of who performs them. A CEO who doesn't maximize profit is replaced by one who will. It doesn't matter if the CEO is empathetic or not. The position requires certain actions, and people who won't take those actions don't get the position."

"So the solution is changing incentives rather than changing people."

"Ideally, yes. But changing incentives requires political will that doesn't exist because the people with power benefit from current arrangements."

"Which brings us back to individuals. The people who maintain these systems, who profit from them, who prevent reform."
