Adrian spent three weeks in a state of suspended animation, neither continuing his interventions nor abandoning them entirely. He returned to Cambridge, to his apartment filled with Eleanor's orchids—still alive, somehow, despite his neglect—and his laboratory, where compounds sat in refrigerated storage waiting for purposes he no longer fully endorsed.

Detective Chen's question haunted him. Could he develop a non-terminal intervention? One that induced empathy without death? The theoretical possibility consumed his waking hours, pulling him away from his list of targets into a realm of pure research that reminded him, uncomfortably, of who he'd been before Eleanor died.

He started with the literature. Twenty years of advances in neurochemistry, much of it building on his own foundational work. Oxytocin receptor agonists, serotonin modulators, prefrontal cortex stimulation techniques. The field had progressed faster than he'd realized during his isolation, producing tools that might make reversible empathy induction genuinely feasible.

The breakthrough came from an unexpected direction. A team at Stanford had developed a targeted ultrasound technique capable of temporarily activating specific brain regions without invasive surgery. The technology was still experimental, intended for treating depression and PTSD, but Adrian immediately saw its potential. If ultrasound could activate the prefrontal cortex's empathetic processing centers, it might induce temporary empathy without the neurological damage caused by his chemical compounds.

He spent two weeks designing experiments, running simulations, calculating parameters. The ultrasound approach required precise targeting—millimeter accuracy to avoid activating adjacent regions—but Adrian's neuroscience expertise was ideally suited to the challenge. He designed a focused ultrasound array that could be worn like a headset, directing acoustic energy to the specific neural circuits involved in empathetic processing.

The theory was elegant. Targeted ultrasound would temporarily increase neural activity in the prefrontal cortex's mirror neuron system, enhancing the subject's ability to perceive and share others' emotions. The effect would be temporary—hours rather than days—wearing off as the ultrasound stimulation ended. No drugs, no permanent changes, no death.

It was, Adrian realized with something like wonder, exactly what he'd claimed his research was about. Understanding empathy. Enhancing it. Not destroying those who lacked it, but offering them the possibility of experiencing what they'd been missing.

He built a prototype in his laboratory, working sixteen-hour days with a focus he hadn't felt since his early career. The device was crude—a mess of transducers and amplifiers and cooling systems held together by optimism and zip ties—but the underlying principles were sound. He tested it on himself first, adjusting the parameters until he felt the familiar expansion of consciousness that came from heightened mirror neuron activity.
