Richard Holloway died three days after Adrian's conversation with Detective Chen. The official cause was "rapidly progressive frontotemporal dementia," a diagnosis that surprised no one who knew his family's medical history—his father had died of similar symptoms, though over years rather than days.

What did surprise people was Holloway's final act. Less than twenty-four hours before his death, he'd signed documents transferring three hundred million dollars to a foundation for environmental health research in Louisiana's cancer alley. He'd also directed his company's lawyers to settle all pending lawsuits without negotiation, offering victims' families ten times what they were seeking.

His board of directors, horrified, voted to remove him as CEO while he was still alive but incapacitated. They also voted to reverse his settlement offers, claiming he'd been mentally incompetent when he signed them. The legal battle would continue for years, but the gesture itself was unprecedented. Richard Holloway had never voluntarily given anyone anything.

Adrian read the news reports with professional satisfaction. Holloway's response to the intervention confirmed a pattern: affective void subjects, when forced to experience empathy, attempted to compensate for their previous actions through radical generosity. This suggested that induced empathy didn't merely produce emotional distress but activated genuine moral reasoning, a cognitive process that persisted even after the emotional experience ended.

He recorded these observations in his notebook, then sat for a long time in his motel room, thinking about Detective Chen's questions.

She was right about one thing: his interventions didn't change the systems that produced men like Holloway. Whitfield's company kept raising prices. Kravitz's hedge fund kept liquidating companies. The structural incentives that rewarded predation remained intact, producing new predators as fast as Adrian could eliminate the old ones.

He was not, as he'd initially believed, administering justice. He was conducting research. The subjects' deaths were not the point but the method, a necessary consequence of the compounds he'd developed. The real purpose was understanding—understanding empathy, understanding moral failure, understanding whether a broken conscience could be repaired through chemical intervention.

This distinction mattered to him. Justice implied moral authority he wasn't certain he possessed. Research implied scientific curiosity that felt safer, more legitimate, less vulnerable to Chen's accusation of vigilantism.
