The Silver Keeper
A magical silver mouse weaves starlight to mend a dying lighthouse, binding an old keeper to hope, legacy, and eternal flame.
The storm had been chewing on the cliffs for three days.
It came in from the northeast with teeth of salt and iron, tearing at the slate tiles and howling through the gaps in the mortar. Old Maris sat by the stove, wrapped in a shawl that had once been red and was now the color of old wine, listening to the sea throw itself against the rocks below.
She was not afraid of storms.
She had lived in the lighthouse for sixty-two years, first as a child trailing behind her father, then as his apprentice, then as the keeper herself. She had seen gales that ripped trees from the earth and turned the sky the color of a bruise. She had watched lightning strike the rod atop the lantern room and dance down the stairs in a blue, silent waltz.
But this storm felt different.
It felt final.
On the table, held down by a tin of stale biscuits, lay the letter.
The paper was cheap, the ink already feathering at the edges from the damp. Maris did not need to read it again. She had memorized every cruel, polite word.
