The Green Signal
A father's illegal traffic override hides a desperate rescue — Inspector Verma unravels a vanishing girl, a bank cover-up, and one green light.
Inspector Rohan Verma hated intersections.
Not the traffic. Not the noise. The waiting. Thirty seconds of red, and in a town like Kasauli Hills, thirty seconds was enough time for a life to end.
That was the joke people made about the crossing outside St. Aldous Bank, where seventeen-year-old Meher Kapoor had vanished on a Tuesday evening, somewhere between the red light and the green.
She had been seen at 7:42 PM, waiting to cross. By 7:43, the signal had changed. By 7:44, she was gone.
No scream. No struggle caught on the grainy shop-front camera. Just a girl in a mustard coat, standing at the curb — and then not.
Rohan had worked missing-persons cases before. They usually resolved themselves: a runaway, a boyfriend, a bus ticket bought in cash. This one refused to resolve.
Three weeks in, he still had nothing but a single, useless detail. The traffic camera, for one flickering half-second, had caught something odd. Not Meher. The signal itself.
The light had turned green — and stayed green. For eleven minutes.
