Lessons in Shadow
The Undercroft swallowed them whole.
Elara had expected a dungeon—dank stone, rusted chains, the remnants of ancient torture. What she found was something far stranger and far more wondrous.
They emerged from the passage into a cathedral of living crystal. The walls glowed with inner light—not the harsh artificial brightness of Order light-crystals, but something organic, breathing, alive. Colors shifted across the surfaces in slow waves: gold fading into violet, violet into silver, silver into a darkness that somehow still shone.
"Valdris's work," Kaelen breathed. "He grew this place from the Luminara's own substance. It is not built. It is cultivated."
Elara reached out to touch the nearest wall. Her fingers sank slightly into the crystal, and she felt a pulse—ancient, vast, aware. The Luminara, sleeping beneath the palace, dreaming in light and shadow.
"It knows we are here," she whispered.
"It has known about me since I was born." Kaelen moved deeper into the chamber, his shadow-lantern unnecessary in the ambient glow. "I used to dream about this place. I thought they were just nightmares. But I was seeing through the curse—through the shadow magic trying to connect with its source."
They moved through chambers that defied geometry—staircases that climbed into themselves, doorways that opened into spaces that could not fit within the palace's footprint. Valdris had not just built a laboratory. He had built a world between worlds, a pocket of reality where the normal rules did not apply.
