The prince found her in the rose garden.

Elara had retreated there after the Thornhaven encounter, needing space to breathe, to recalculate, to ensure her mask was still firmly in place. The garden was one of the palace's lesser-known beauties—a walled sanctuary of climbing roses and murmuring fountains, deserted during the reception in favor of the grand ballroom.

She stood by a fountain, letting the sound of water cover her thoughts, when she heard footsteps on the gravel path.

"Lady Vane."

She turned. Kaelen Veltharim stood at the garden's entrance, backlit by the glow of light-crystals from the main hall. He'd abandoned the receiving line, apparently. Alone. Without his customary entourage of courtiers and guards.

"Your Highness." She curtsied, recovering her composure. "I didn't expect to find you in the lesser gardens."

"And I didn't expect to find anyone interesting at this wretched event." He approached, moving with that same careful economy she'd noticed earlier. Each step deliberate. Each gesture measured against some internal scale of energy expenditure. "May I join you?"

"It's your garden, Your Highness."

"Call me Kaelen. We're alone, and I'm tired of being 'Highness.'" He settled onto the fountain's edge, close enough that she could smell the herbs on his clothes—medicinal, not ornamental. Chamomile and willow bark and something darker beneath. Something that reminded her of shadow-smoke. "You're new to court."

"Is it obvious?"

"Only to someone looking." He studied her with those extraordinary eyes, and Elara felt the uncomfortable sensation of being genuinely seen. Not her mask. Not her performance. Something beneath. "You don't scan the room for the most powerful person to attach yourself to. You don't laugh at jokes that aren't funny. You stand by fountains in deserted gardens instead of networking in ballrooms."

"Perhaps I'm simply unsuited for court life."

"Perhaps." He tilted his head. "Or perhaps you're playing a different game than everyone else. The question is which game, and why."

Elara's pulse quickened. She kept her expression neutral, falling back on years of training. "I'm here for the same reason as every other unwed noblewoman, Kaelen. To make a favorable impression."

"Are you?" He smiled, and it was nothing like his court performance. This smile was sharp, assessing, almost predatory. "Then tell me, Lady Vane—what do you think of our kingdom?"

The question was a test. She knew it was a test. But the answer that came out wasn't the one she'd prepared.

"I think it's beautiful and rotting," she said. "I think the light is too bright because it's trying to hide the darkness underneath. I think there are people eating garbage in the Outer Ring while nobles drink wine that costs a year's wages. And I think the Luminous Order would burn the entire city to ash if it meant maintaining their monopoly on divine truth."

She stopped, shocked at herself. That wasn't part of her cover. That wasn't part of any sensible approach to a prince she was supposed to eventually kill.

But Kaelen didn't look offended. He looked... alive. As if her words had breathed something into him that had been suffocating.

"Go on," he said quietly.

"I think you're dying," she heard herself say. "And I think you're hiding it brilliantly."

The garden went silent except for the fountain's murmur.

Kaelen's face went perfectly still—not the controlled stillness of a prince, but the frozen shock of a man whose deepest secret has just been spoken aloud by a stranger.

"That's a dangerous observation, Lady Vane."

"I'm a dangerous woman, Kaelen."

Something flared in his eyes—surprise, recognition, maybe even hope. He opened his mouth to respond, and then his body betrayed him.

It started subtly. A tremor in his left hand. A tightening around his eyes. Then his breath hitched, caught, and he doubled over with a gasp that was half-groan, half-silenced scream.

Elara moved without thinking. She caught him before he hit the gravel, lowering him to sit against the fountain's stone base. His skin was cold—unnaturally cold—and the black veins at his neck were suddenly visible, pulsing with something that wasn't blood.

She knew this. She knew exactly what this was.

Shadow-sickness. No—not sickness. Shadow-awakening. The same thing that had nearly killed her at twelve, that still tried to claim her during every drift episode.

"Your Highness—Kaelen—can you hear me?"

He was conscious, barely, amber-gold eyes glazed with pain. "Don't... call... guards..."

"I won't." She made a decision in that moment that had nothing to do with missions and everything to do with recognition. Two people hiding the same secret, suffering the same fate.

She placed her hand over his heart and let the barest thread of her Umbramancy flow into him.

It was like touching a storm. His body was a battlefield—Light magic suppression fighting against Shadow emergence, both tearing him apart in their struggle for dominance. She'd never felt anything like it. Her own shadow had manifested in rage and grief, but this... this was systematic. Cultivated. Someone had been feeding this conflict for years.

She didn't try to heal him—that was beyond her skill. But she could ease the battle. She threaded her shadow through his like a diplomat negotiating between warring nations, soothing the conflict just enough for his body to recover equilibrium.

The trembling slowed. His breathing steadied. The black veins retreated beneath his skin, hidden again.

Kaelen opened his eyes and looked at her with an expression she couldn't read.

"You," he whispered.

"Me," she agreed.

They stayed like that for a long moment—her hand on his chest, his heartbeat gradually steadying beneath her palm. The roses breathed their perfume into the warm air. The fountain sang its endless song.

"Who are you?" he finally asked.

"Right now? Someone who understands." She removed her hand, suddenly aware of how intimate the gesture had been. "The rest... is complicated."

"I excel at complicated." He struggled to sit up straighter, some of his courtier's polish returning, but his eyes remained raw. "You have shadow magic."

"And you have the Hollow Curse. Or something very like it."

He flinched. "You know that term."

"I know many terms, Kaelen. I know that the curse isn't what the Order says it is. I know that what I just felt inside you isn't a disease—it's a war between two kinds of magic that should never have been forced to fight." She paused. "And I know that someone has been deliberately aggravating that war. The patterns in your aura... they've been cultivated. Someone is killing you slowly, and they've been doing it for years."

The color drained from his already-pale face. "That's impossible."

"Is it?" She stood, brushing dirt from her gown. "The Order has been 'treating' you, yes? Prayer ceremonies? Light infusions?"

"Every week since I was fourteen."

"And has your condition improved?"

His silence was answer enough.

Elara looked down at him—this golden prince with his dying eyes and his hidden truth—and felt something shift in her chest. Something dangerous.

"You have secrets, Kaelen. I have secrets. And someone is using your secrets to murder you." She held out her hand to help him up. "Perhaps we should compare notes."

He stared at her hand for a long moment, suspicion warring with desperate hope across his expressive face.

"You're either my salvation or my destruction, Lady Vane. I'm not certain which would be worse."

"I'm certain of very little," she admitted. "But I know this: the enemy of my enemy is at least worth talking to."

He took her hand. His grip was strong despite his illness, and she felt the shadow-pulse beneath his skin respond to her touch like a tuning fork finding its note.

"Very well." He rose, steadying himself against the fountain. "But not here. Too many eyes. Tomorrow evening, my private study. Third floor, east wing. Tell the guard I invited you to discuss 'Eastern March trade agreements.'"

"And will we be discussing trade?"

His smile returned—that sharp, genuine expression that made him look less like a prince and more like a man who had been waiting a very long time for an ally.

"No, Lady Vane. I suspect we'll be discussing treason. And survival. And perhaps—" He touched his chest where her hand had rested. "—perhaps we'll discuss what it means to be something the world has declared impossible."

He left her there, walking back toward the light and music of the ball with his perfect prince's stride. Only she saw the slight stumble, quickly corrected. Only she knew what it cost him to perform normalcy.

Elara stood alone in the rose garden, her hand still warm from his touch, her mind racing through implications she hadn't anticipated.

She'd come here to kill a prince.

Instead, she'd found a dying man who shared her secret. A man being murdered by the same system that had destroyed her village. A man who looked at her shadow not with horror, but with recognition.
