Brother's Shadow
Elara managed to evade Darian for two days.
She stayed close to Kaelen, performed her role as favored suitor with increased visibility, and avoided anywhere Darian was likely to appear. She slept with her dagger beneath her pillow and woke at every sound.
On the third day, Kaelen invited her to his study again, and this time he wasn't alone.
Ser Corin Ashford stood by the window, arms crossed, sandy hair catching the afternoon light. He was broad-shouldered and weathered, with the kind of face that looked like it had been handsome before too many fights added character. A scar crossed his chest, visible above his shirt collar—old, white, deliberate.
"This is Corin," Kaelen said. "My sworn shield. The only other person who knows about my condition."
Corin studied Elara with frank assessment. "You're the shadow witch."
"I'm the woman helping your prince find a cure."
"Same thing, isn't it?" He didn't move from the window, but she noticed his hand rested near his sword hilt. "I've killed two Umbramancers in my time. Order assignments."
