The plane landed in Berlin at 4:47 a.m., but Arin never saw the city. They drove her through a checkpoint, down a ramp, and into a tunnel that swallowed the sky whole.

Three hundred metres beneath the Max Planck Institute, the Babel Vault waited.

It was the largest archive of dead languages on Earth. Wax cylinders from tribes that no longer existed. Magnetic reels of dialects no tongue had shaped in centuries. Hard drives holding the grammars of voices that had gone quiet before history began. The air was cold and dry—filtered to protect the old recordings from moisture. It smelled like the inside of a tomb that had been sealed for a thousand years.

Koji Tenzin stood at the final security door. He looked smaller than she remembered. His shoulders were hunched, his grey hair wild, his eyes hollowed out by eighteen hours without sleep. When he saw her, he didn't speak. He just opened his arms.

She walked into them and pressed her face against his coat. He smelled like coffee and old paper.

"You look terrible," he said into her hair.

"I feel worse." She pulled back, and her voice cracked on the next words. "They're calling it the Silence now. It has a name. That makes it real."

He nodded. He didn't say anything comforting, because there was nothing comforting to say.
