The evidence was circumstantial but extensive—travel records, financial transactions, pattern analysis, and testimony from cooperating witnesses who'd observed Adrian's activities.

He surrendered without resistance, offering his hands for cuffing with the same methodical calm he'd applied to his research. The agents were professional, almost respectful. They'd read his academic papers, knew his reputation, understood the complexity of what they'd been assigned to investigate.

Chen was not arrested, though the warrant named her as a person of interest. She'd anticipated this, had prepared statements that acknowledged her knowledge of Adrian's activities without admitting complicity. It was a thin line to walk, but her legal advisors believed she could walk it.

Adrian was taken to a federal facility in New York, processed, and placed in solitary confinement pending arraignment. The isolation was not punishment but protection—the case had attracted media attention that made him a target for both supporters and detractors.

His court-appointed attorney was competent but overwhelmed. The federal prosecutor assigned to the case was ambitious, talented, and convinced that Adrian represented the most dangerous kind of criminal—one who'd convinced himself that his crimes served a higher purpose.

"Dr. Vale," the prosecutor said during their first meeting, a thin man named Morrison who'd built his career on high-profile cases. "You need to understand the position you're in.
