He filled the waiting time with analysis, reviewing data from previous interventions, refining his compounds, and expanding his theoretical framework. Her technology had been used to target depressed teenagers with advertising for alcohol and gambling. It had identified political dissidents in countries where dissent was fatal. It had helped insurance companies deny coverage to individuals whose data profiles suggested future health problems. Diana St. Clair had weaponized privacy invasion at global scale, and she'd become a billionaire doing it.

Adrian found her particularly offensive because she understood exactly what she was doing. Unlike Whitfield, who genuinely didn't comprehend suffering, or Kravitz, who saw people as abstractions, St. Clair was fully aware of her technology's consequences. She had simply calculated that her personal benefit exceeded the aggregate harm. She was not an affective void. She was something worse: a person who felt empathy and chose to ignore it.

This presented an interesting scientific question. Would the intervention affect her differently? Would her intact empathetic capacity resist the compound, or would the forced amplification of empathy be even more devastating precisely because her conscience was functional enough to recognize what she'd done?

Adrian spent eight weeks planning her intervention, longer than any previous target. St. Clair's security was exceptional—she had reason to fear retaliation from multiple directions—and her personal habits were erratic. She maintained four residences, traveled constantly, and employed a rotating staff of bodyguards whose schedules changed randomly to prevent pattern analysis.

The breakthrough came from an unexpected source. St. Clair was an insomniac, a condition well-documented in tech industry profiles that celebrated her "relentless work ethic." She managed her insomnia with a combination of prescription sleep medication and a proprietary "sleep optimization system" that included white noise generators, temperature-controlled bedding, and a custom-blended aromatherapy oil that her personal wellness consultant prepared monthly.
