THE REWEAVING
Three weeks later, Kael stood on a hill and watched a river climb into the sky. The water flowed upward in a spiral, vanishing into the clouds. Fish swam in it. They did not fall. The world had changed. The old rules of down and up were suggestions now.
Kael raised his hand. The gray spiral turned. He reached toward the river. He felt the chaos in it. The water wanted to flow down. The chaos wanted it to flow up. The two forces were at war. The river was a knot.
Kael pulled. Gently. He untangled the knot. The water sighed. It began to flow down again. Normal. The fish splashed. They seemed confused but happy.
"You're getting better at that," Mira said. She sat on a rock, eating an apple. Her staff lay beside her. The crystal had been replaced with a piece of the Spire's black stone. It glowed gray now. Like Kael's mark.
"I'm learning," Kael said. "The power is not order. It's not chaos. It's... negotiation. I talk to the world. I ask it to be stable. Sometimes it listens."
"And when it doesn't?"
"Then I adapt."
They walked down the hill toward a village. The people there had built their houses on stones that floated three feet off the ground. The children played in the air, jumping from stone to stone. They laughed.
