THE IRON CITY
The Iron City rose from the plains like a black tooth. Its walls were not stone. They were iron plates hammered together, each one taller than a man. They had been built in the age of the old wars, when magic was new and men feared it. Now they kept the chaos out. Or they tried to.
The gates stood open. Refugees poured in. Farmers with empty carts. Merchants with worthless gold. Children with no parents. The guards wore iron armor and carried pikes. They did not smile. They did not speak. They counted heads and let people through.
Kael pulled his cloak tight. The mark was hidden under a leather glove Mira had found on the road. The glove was too small. The mark pressed against it, hot and angry. Kael kept his hand in his pocket.
"Name," the guard said. He was a young man with a beard he had not grown into.
"Kael. Farmhand."
"From where?"
"South. Brackwater."
The guard's eyes flicked to a list. "Brackwater is gone. Confirmed by riders this morning."
