ASHES OF THE WEAVE

Kael Vane sat on the riverbank and watched his fishing line drift. The water ran 
clear and cold. Three years since the Legion, and he still woke before dawn. Old 
habits. The scar on his cheek itched. He ignored it.

The sky tore open.

It happened without sound. A jagged line split the blue overhead, like a knife 
through canvas. The line widened. Purple light spilled out. The air smelled of 
copper and something sweet, like rotting flowers.

Kael dropped his pole. He grabbed Half-Edge, his broken sword, from the grass. The 
blade ended at a jagged halfway point, but the grip felt right in his hand.

Screams came from Brackwater village behind him.

Kael ran. His boots pounded the dirt path. The tear in the sky grew. Threads of 
light?咐hin as spider silk?卹rifted down from the wound. They touched the ground 
and the grass turned gray. A oak tree twisted. Its bark peeled back to show meat 
underneath. The meat pulsed.

"Weave break," Kael whispered. He had heard stories. He hadn't believed them.

A woman ran past him, clutching a child. Her eyes were wide and white. "The void!" 
she screamed. "The void takes!"

Kael reached the village square. The well had turned inside out. Stones floated in 
a ring around the water, which hung in the air like a fat blue worm. Three things 
stood near the baker's shop.

They looked almost human. Almost. Two legs, two arms, a head. But their limbs were 
too long. Their joints bent backward. Their skin was not skin?呵t was a moving layer 
of violet light and white bone that clicked and shifted. They had no faces. Just 
smooth, blank heads that tilted as if listening.

The Unraveled.

One of them reached for a dog. The dog became dust. Not dead. Unmade. The dust 
swirled into the creature's chest.

Kael stepped forward. He didn't think about it. His body moved the way the Legion 
had trained it. He raised Half-Edge.

"Hey!" he shouted. His voice cracked. "Over here!"

The three turned. They had no eyes, but he felt them look at him. The air grew 
cold. His breath fogged.

The first Unraveled lunged. It moved too fast. Its arm whipped toward Kael's head. 
He ducked. The wind of the blow ruffled his hair. He stabbed upward with Half-Edge. 
The broken blade hit the creature's chest. The blade snapped in half. The remaining 
piece became rust in Kael's hand.

The creature grabbed his throat. Its fingers were cold. Not ice cold. Absence cold. 
Like touching a hole where something should be.

Kael couldn't breathe. He kicked. He punched. Nothing worked. The world went gray 
at the edges.

His right hand burned.

Pain lanced up his arm. He looked down. A black spiral had appeared on his palm. 
It looked like a brand, but the skin was not burned. It was... rewritten. The spiral 
turned. The lines moved like worms.

Power surged through him. Not warm. Not good. Just power. Raw and hungry.

Kael pressed his marked palm against the Unraveled's chest.

Light exploded. White and black and violet. The creature screamed?卦 sound like 
static and breaking glass. It flew backward. Its chest caved in. It hit the ground 
and dissolved into black smoke.

The other two Unraveled hesitated. Their blank heads tilted the other way. Then they 
backed into the floating dust and vanished.

Kael fell to his knees. He clutched his right hand. The mark pulsed. It itched deep 
under the skin. He could feel it in his bones. In his teeth.

The sky tear was still there. It bled purple light onto the world.

Kael looked at his hand. The black spiral was quiet now. But it was not gone.

"What are you?" he asked it.

The mark did not answer. But it watched him. He could feel it.

Kael stood up. His legs shook. He looked at the ruined village, the floating well, 
the meat tree. He looked at the dead dog's dust swirling in the wind.

He knew one thing. He could not stay here.

The Weave was breaking. And something had chosen him to stand in the gap.

He hated being chosen.

Kael wrapped his hand in a strip of cloth from his shirt. He picked up the rusted 
remains of Half-Edge. He walked toward the edge of the village, away from the tear, 
away from the dust.

Behind him, the sky groaned. The fracture widened.

Kael walked faster.
